Going on Vacation? The Leave-With-Peace-of-Mind Home Checklist

The 3 a.m. Hotel Question
Every traveler knows the moment: two days into the trip, somewhere between dinner and sleep, the thought arrives — did I leave the water on?
You cannot un-think it. But you can leave home in a way that makes the answer always yes, everything is fine. Here is the fifteen-minute version.
Water — the one that ruins vacations
- Turn off the main water valve if you will be gone more than a few days. A burst supply line with nobody home does more damage than almost anything short of fire.
- Can't shut the main? At minimum, close the valves to the washing machine and check under sinks — braided supply hoses are the usual culprits.
- Set the water heater to vacation mode (or its lowest setting). No sense heating water for an empty house.
Power and appliances
- Unplug the small stuff — coffee makers, toasters, chargers. It saves a little energy and removes a little risk.
- Leave the fridge alone but empty anything that will turn on you by the return flight.
- Check the dryer is empty and off — never start a load on your way out the door.
Make the house look lived-in
- Hold the mail or ask a neighbor to collect it — a stuffed mailbox is an advertisement.
- Put two lamps on timers, set to different rooms and different hours.
- Tell one trusted neighbor you are away, and leave them your number.
The part everyone skips: your papers
If something does go wrong — a storm, a leak, a break-in — the call to your insurance company happens from a beach chair or an airport gate. That call goes very differently depending on one thing: whether you can find your policy number, your home details, and photos of your belongings from your phone.
Pack Your House in Your Pocket
This is the quiet advantage of keeping your home organized in PAMKIT. Your insurance policies, appliance details, serial numbers, and home documents live securely in one place — reachable from anywhere, which matters exactly when you are anywhere but home.
Ask Pamela before you leave: she will walk you through a pre-trip check in a couple of minutes, tuned to your actual home.
Go make memories. Your house — and your paperwork — will be right where you left them.
