How long will my appliance last?

Free appliance lifespan checker. Pick an appliance and its age to see the typical lifespan, years left, signs it is wearing out, and when to start saving for a replacement.

How long does a dishwasher last?

About 9 years on average, according to InterNACHI's life expectancy chart. Hard water, heavy use and skipped filter cleaning can shorten that.

How long does a refrigerator last?

InterNACHI gives 9 to 13 years. Pamkit uses 13 years as its planning figure. Keeping the coils clean and the door seals tight helps it reach the high end.

How long does a water heater last?

A conventional tank water heater typically lasts 6 to 12 years. Rust-colored hot water, rumbling from sediment and moisture at the base are common signs it is near the end.

How do I know when to replace an appliance?

Look at age against typical life, how often it needs repair, and whether it is still safe. Many people start setting money aside at about half the typical life and decide on replacement at about 80 percent of it.

Is a repair worth it on an old appliance?

A common rule of thumb is that if a repair costs about half the price of a new one, and the appliance is past the middle of its typical life, replacing is usually the better use of money.

Save it in Pamkit

Keep this appliance with its receipt, manual and warranty, and get a reminder before it reaches the end of its typical life.

Appliances do not fail on a schedule, but the averages are a useful planning guide. For each type we show the range from a published inspector life expectancy chart, and one planning figure that drives the years left.

The planning figure is the same number the Pamkit app uses. You are in the middle of life at half the planning figure, and near the end at 80 percent of it. Those two points are when we suggest you start saving, and when you decide between repair and replace.

The signs listed are common ones, not a diagnosis. A failing appliance can also be a safety problem (gas, heat, water), so call a qualified technician if you smell gas, see sparks or find water.
